Back in the 70’s, Wrigley’s Doublemint gum ads had a catchy slogan: “Double your pleasure, double your fun.” In these ads, a bunch of twins and their friends could be seen frolicking, strolling, whitewater rafting, etc. before biting into a stick of gum. Today we’re asking you––no, not to chew gum, please, too much sugar––but to double up your socializing efforts and kill two birds with one stroll.

Specifically:

  1. Choose a physical activity you can not only easily do with a friend, but one that is made all the more special when done in tandem. Some ideas: walking, biking, taking a yoga class, going for a run, playing tennis, hiking through the woods, going bowling, etc.

  2. Call up a friend and ask them to join you in your physical activity.

Science tells us that those who exercise regularly are less prone to dementia. It also tells us that those who socialize regularly are also less prone to dementia. It further tells us that the more you can combine all of the following into your life––good nutrition, adequate exercise, 7-8 hours of sleep, proper stress management, cognitive training, and socialization––the greater chance of pushing off cognitive decline.

So what are you waiting for? Double your pleasure, double your fun.
